A reboot of the franchise in the style of the first two Journeys, Journey 3: From the Earth to the Moon tells the story of Professor Jonas Dansen (Melvil Poesen), who unveils a piece of the Moon for the first time since the Apollo missions. Reviewers found the movie more entertaining than the second and noted that the story is best told in an animated form rather than a stop-motion feature. However, the movie does contain some of the trademark elements of the franchise.
Journey 3 was to be the first installment in the modern reboot, but during filming in 2011, a dispute erupted between the franchise rights holder, Universal, and Steven Spielberg over a script change and the production of a third movie. Spielberg had already worked on the movie, and he was not overly fond of the alterations. Shortly after the departure of Spielberg and Dwayne Johnson, negotiations for a new deal stalled, which is probably for the best considering the production schedule. Remember that Universal is also working on the Fast And Furious 7 franchise, which will be released in May 2016. The absence of Johnson really hurt the franchise when it came to promoting it and making it relevant.
